A haunting and urgent meditation on environmental collapse, Desolación II was created in response to the devastating wildfires that swept through Almería in the early 2000s — near Guirado’s home and spiritual center in southern Spain. Stark vertical forms evoke scorched trees and ash-laden air, rendered in visceral reds and earthy charcoals. The work is both elegy and warning.
Painted during the final years of Guirado’s life, Desolación II was part of his environmental series, which culminated in the 2006 short film The Great Experiment of Humankind (viewable on the Guirado Estate YouTube channel). These works marked his lifelong concern with ecological imbalance, positioning him as one of the early pioneers of environmental messaging in European art.
The symbolism here is strikingly relevant today — a prophetic, passionate vision of nature undone.
Artist Legacy & Continuation
This piece has also been reimagined as a digital work by Catalina Guirado — her own interpretation of what the landscape might look like after the fire. Living in wildfire-prone Los Angeles, she continues the legacy of using art as environmental testimony under the Studio Guirado imprint.
