Before he became a painter of visionary spiritual and environmental works, Juan Antonio Guirado once stood in the bullring. At 18, he trained to be a matador — the ultimate dream for a poor boy from rural Andalucía, offering the glamour and status of a rockstar. But when he finally stood before the bull, he looked into its eyes… and couldn’t make the kill. That moment changed the course of his life, and he returned to painting — but never forgot the powerful symbolism of the corrida.

In this series, Guirado pays tribute to the heritage of his homeland. He often painted himself as the matador, perhaps dreaming of what might have been. These works — alongside passionate scenes of flamenco, rural landscapes, and historic rituals — reflect the Duende of his soul: the heartbeat that lies wihin every true Andalucian.
